Here are a few sketches and paintings from some of my recent trips abroad, including repeat visits to Normandy and Venice. The most recent set of paintings is a series called 'The Eye of the Beholder', which draws on images from a trip to Costa Rica. They attempt to confront the idea of beauty and fragility in nature, in subjects which are not always considered beautiful. Technically, they represent a return to experiments with a wide range of materials, including cling film, lining paper, wall filler and paper towels. I exhibited this series in Purbeck Art Weeks in 2021.
The animal portraits are sketches and larger oil paintings based on photographs I took during a trip to Namibia and South Africa in 2018. The three large cat studies are now guarding my allotment against inquisitive Sika deer!
